Hua Jai Insee Community

Hua Jai Insee Community

Hua Jai Insee, meaning “Organic Heart” in Thai, is a community of 14 members. The youngest member is only 19 years old!

The group grows over 20 varieties of non-GMO PGS organic vegetables. What’s really special about this group is the fact that they place a strong emphasis on financial independence. One of the groups’ rules requires all their members to join the group’s savings group to increase financial literacy and stability, helping all members to get rid of their debts! In times of difficulties, group members can take out loans from their group savings, reducing the need for reliance on informal lenders and putting an end to the vicious cycle of indebtedness, which is a deep-rooted issue in Thailand’s agriculture. The youngest group member of this group is only 19 years old!

Kaset Insee Romyen Ratchaburi Group

Kaset Insee Romyen Ratchaburi Group

In 2016, a group of Ratchaburi farmers from across the province started the Kaset Insee Romyen Ratchaburi Group together as a PGS group.

From the very beginning, the group has been strongly committed to organic agriculture for the health of farmers, consumers and the environment. Each member farm also allocated a part of their land to grow forest and are committed to never using any chemicals in every single farming stage. Today, with more than 23 member farms, of which 22 are PGS and 1 is transitioning, the group is growing more and more diverse agriculture products, including vegetables, fruits, rice, mushrooms, and meat.

Under the Sampran Model’s guidance, the group has a total of PGS 25 rules including:

  • Not using and bringing any chemicals, including antibiotics and accelerators, that are harmful to humans and animals. For animal feed, group members must use feed containing at least 60% organic ingredients.
  • Creating a circular ecosystem within the area, including planting forest trees and nourishing the soil.
  • Value addition must take into account the health of consumers. This means following nutritional recommendations, using at least 70% organic ingredients and using no synthetic additives.

Ruam Jai Non Kor Thung Community Enterprise

Ruam Jai Non Kor Thung Community Enterprise

Ruam Jai Non Kor Thung Community Enterprise started off as an organic compost group in 2003 after receiving training from “Sang Fhun Garden”.

The original goal was to help reduce group members’ input costs, especially fertilizer costs, so that they could gain a higher profit and become more financially independent. At the same time, the group created their own community mill factory to increase rice farmers’ capacity in value-addition and crop management. These initial steps became a driving force for the group to reach higher goals, even though they initially only had 1,100 baht investment in the group. In 2006, Ruam Jai Non Kor Thung Community Enterprise entered into the “Khao Khunnatum” Group. Afterwards, they began their first certification process from Thailand’s ACT Organic, while focusing on increasing their marketing efforts. In 2010, Amnat Charoen Commercial Office invited them to co-found “Satyadharma Rice Group Amnat Charoen,” which Ruam Jai Non Kor Thung Community Enterprise was part of until 2015. Since 2015, the group has been strengthening their marketing and value-addition skills and now have PGS as well as EU, COR and IFOAM certifications. Today, the group is stronger than ever, as they now also have groups from other tumbons in Amnat Charoen as part of their group!

Khun Prakrong and Khun Kajorn

Khun Prakrong and Khun Kajorn

The husband-and-wife duo behind our raw honey and seedless limes.

Khun Prakrong and Khun Kajorn are the husband-and-wife duo behind our raw honey and seedless limes. After working in Bangkok for years, Khun Prakrong moved to Phu Chi Fa, Chiang Rai where she opened a small homestay on the hills of the breathtaking Phu Chi Fa with Khun Kajorn. Khun Kajorn is actually a former park staff and park ranger who worked for 8 years to protect the Phu Chi Fa National Forest Park. His work involved planting trees, protecting wild animals, putting out forest fires, building and looking after check dams as well as helping to educate the locals about protected wildlife species!

All the raw honey they make for us is from bees that naturally feast on wild flowers, such as “Dok Gor,” Mountain ebony tree and wild Himalayan cherry (“Thai Sakura”) in Phu Chi Fa! Besides honey and seedless limes, Khun Prakrong and Khun Kajorn also grow beautiful Anthurium Laceleaf flowers.

The Pen Sook Pa La-U Community Network

The Pen Sook Pa La-U Community Network

The Pen Sook Pa La-U Community Network is a PGS organic group based in the Pa La-U Forest.

The group leader, Khun Luang, previously worked in environmental conservation and was an elephant conservationist volunteer in his community. Khun Luang is also a “Soil Doctor” of his tumbon (an official title given by the tumbon –how cool is that!).

This group is extremely passionate about organic regenerative agriculture and has roots in the human-wildlife conflict with elephants in the area, as they started off as an environmental conservation group and the Huai Sat Yai Elephant Conservation Commission group aimed at reducing human-wildlife tensions between local villagers and elephants. In 2004, the group became the Pen Sook Pa La-U Community Network –committed to employing organic agriculture as a primary tool in their work. The group also encourages their group members to collectively plan their planting and harvesting, while helping to coordinate capacity and skill training that their members may need. The Pen Sook Pa La-U Community Network also still adheres to the group’s original concept, which is “Humans, elephants and forest are dependent and intertwined,” as they continue to work to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts in their community. The Pen Sook Pa La-U Community Network also takes meticulous care of all their crops to avoid damage from elephants that may roam into their areas at night. They grow amazing produce, including their signature Chinese Cabbage, Cherry Tomatoes and the most delicious Durians we have ever tasted!

Thai Organic SapBonDin

Thai Organic SapBonDin

The SapBonDin Community Enterprise, Ampur Nong Boon Mak holds an organic certification from the EarthSafe Foundation.

Before the SapBonDin Community Enterprise was born, Khun Thitinan’s parents had already been doing organic agriculture. While they were originally practicing organic monoculture, they later changed to integrated organic polyculture based on Rama IX’s Sufficiency Economy and the New Theory, including the “Nine-Step Theory”. With this strong foundation in organic agriculture from her family, Khun Thitinan decided to found the Nong Bong SapBonDin Community Enterprise in Ampur Nong Boon Mak as a way to further expand her community’s direct market access to consumers. Since then, some of group’s main goals include promoting local and seasonal local fruits and vegetables and offering quality organic produce to consumers at a fair price. Today, the SapBonDin Community Enterprise is part of the EarthSafe Foundation organic standard and has proudly denied any chemical use since 2016!

PGS Organic Chiang Rai

PGS Organic Chiang Rai

After studying and living outside of Chiang Rai, a group of Chiang Rai natives decided to return to their home province and invest in their local community.

The founding group initially had a goal of saving  the “Nang Lae” pineapple, a species native to Chiang Rai. “Nang Lae” used to be a renowned pineapple species, but because it is much harder to grow and international consumers prefer a different species called “Phu Lae,” “Nang Lae” was quickly disappearing from the market and Chiang Rai itself. This inspiration further motivated the group to go beyond saving “Nang Lae” and to create an organic society in Chiang Rai as a way to  help local communities sustainably develop. In 2017, the group officially formed as a PGS organic group with the help of the Thai Organic Agriculture Foundation, Chiang Rai Provincial Land Development Station and Chiang Rai Rajabhat University. Since founding, PGS Organic Chiang Rai has grown to 326 group members from14 amphoes out of Chiang Ria’s 18 amphoes. Today, the group has 97 plang 950 rais 3 ngan 78 square wa of PGS land (that’s a lot of regenerative farming land!). They now have a growing network of fellow organic drivers, including the Sampran Model, the Thai Organic Consumer Association (TOCA), the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, Chiang Rai Provincial Agriculture Office, and the Tea and Coffee Institute of Mae Fah Luang University. PGS Organic Chiang Rai has created an incredible farmers’ group that is truly driven by farmers –for farmers.
